Helpful Accident Information

Being in an accident is a traumatic and stressful event and it is often difficult to think clearly afterwards. Below is a checklist that will help guide you through the process. We recommend you keep a copy of this checklist in your vehicle and we hope you never need refer to it.

Determine the Extent of Damage or Injuries

Try to remain calm. Panic can be infectious and make a bad situation worse. Check yourself and the passengers in your car for any injuries. Also check those travelling in other vehicles that were involved in the accident. If anyone is in immediate need of medical attention, call 911, or assign this task to someone at the location.

Speak only with the police and your insurance company about the accident

After an accident, it is hard not to discuss what had just happened. But it is important to limit your discussion of the accident and not to admit any fault or liability. Avoid discussing with others involved in the accident and speak openly to Police and your insurance COMPANY (not the agent) only.

File a Car Accident Report with the Police

Even in a minor accident it is important to make sure there is a legal accident report. Do not leave the scene until the police file a full report.

Collect and record the facts

Ask for the names, address, and phone numbers of all involved in the accident. If possible, check the driver's licenses of others and record names, addresses directly. Make a note of the other driver's vehicle make, model and license plate #.

Report the accident to your insurance COMPANY (not the agent)

Call your agent or insurance company's 800-number immediately, even at the scene with the police if possible. A police officer can usually give the insurance company more accurate information than those involved and likely upset by the accident. This can save claim processing time.
